Course Description:
Forms, styles, trends, cultural and historical aspects of western and world music within the context of creating increased enjoyment and understanding of music. Meets core and aesthetics requirements.
Course’s Role in the Curriculum
Introduction to Music has no prerequisites. Any student may take this course for required (or elective) liberal arts core credit.
Relationship of the Course to UMary’s Mission and Values:
- Benedictine Values: Modeling the values of hospitality, service, community, moderation, respect for persons, and prayer. This course will specifically expose students to the Benedictine values of respect for persons and community through class discussions and class zoom meetings. The students will also exercise the Benedictine value of moderation in their lives as they allocate independent work time to complete the requirements of this online class.
- Servant Leadership: A definition of servant leadership is available for review online. In this course, students will have the opportunity to be servant leaders within the group discussions.

- Objective: TLW listen and interpret the experience of music using quantifiable concepts. ESPB standard 12005.1, 12020.1, 12015.1 Core Competencies: COM 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, CRT 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6
Assessment: The instructor monitors learning progress through written assignments, exams and discussion forums.
- Objective: TLW develop an appreciation for and opinions about the varied music aesthetics studied. ESPB standard 12005.1, 12020.1, 12015.1 Core Competencies: COM 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, CRT 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6
Assessment: The instructor will monitor student growth through written assignments, exams and discussion forums.
PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM STANDARDS:
ESPB Standards 12005.1, 12010.1, 12015.1 Content Knowledge: The program requires the study of music education content and disciplinary concepts related to the development of a musically educated person. A: Knowledge and skills in the use of basic vocabulary of music. B (e): advanced ability sufficient to assure accurate and musically expressive performance.
ESPB Standard 12005.1c Instrumental music program: The instrumental music program requires study and experiences designed to develop the following, sufficient to teach students in heterogeneous and homogenous groups: (a) knowledge of and performance ability on wind and percussion instruments; and (c) basic knowledge of instrumental problems and strategies as well as sufficient performance skill to assure effective use of the major instrument in demonstrating instrumental technique.
ESPB Standard 12005.1d Instrumental music program: The instrumental music program requires experiences in the following: (a) performing on an instrument in solo as well as in small and large ensembles. ESPB Standards 12005.2, 12010.2, 12015.2 Pedagogical Knowledge: The program requires the ability to apply pedagogical knowledge and skills appropriate to the teaching of music.

POLICIES
Attendance and Excessive Absence Policy:
Students are expected to monitor their own progress, asking questions and signing in to class on canvas.umary.edu frequently. Please note that while all classwork is open on the first day of the course, each assignment and exam has a specific due date and time (CST – Bismarck time). No assignments/exams will be accepted after the published end date of the course.
Excused Absence Policy:
The University has a policy on excused absences related to sponsored/sanctioned activities and events. The policy is available for review online: https://bit.ly/2UuCUYe. Students participating in such activities and events are expected to review this policy and comply with it. As long as appropriate prior notification is given according to this policy, students and faculty reach a mutual agreement concerning make-up work, and students complete the work in question, faculty shall not penalize a student for missing a class or exam when they were granted an excused absence from the university. Any questions concerning the policy may be referred to the course instructor who may refer the question to the athletic director, student activities director, or academic affairs for response.
Assignment & Exam Policy/ies:
Assignments: Assignments are due at 10:00pm in CST (Bismarck, ND time zone) on the date posted on canvas.umary.edu. Late assignments have a 24-hour grace period. After 24 hours, the assignment will be lowered by 1 points for each day the assignment is late.
Exams: Exams are due by 11:59pm in CST except for the exams for Part 7 which are due at 11:00pm CST. The computer system will automatically “lock out” anyone 24 hours after the due date, except for the exams for Part 7 which will lock at 11:59pm CST on the due date.
I understand that sometimes “life happens.” If you think your assignment will be late or you have exceptional circumstances that prevented you from turning in an assignment or completing an exam, please contact me ASAP. You will find me to be an understanding professor when you take the time to inquire about an extension.

WORKLOAD AND GRADING
Workload Expectations:
Since this is a 3 semester credit undergraduate level online course lasting 7 weeks, students can expect to spend a minimum of 6 hours per week instructional time and another 12 hours per week studying outside of instructional time.
Major Assignments: (Learning Experiences to Achieve Course Objectives)
Assignments:
Modules covering a different portion of the text are published on Canvas and correspond to each week of the course. Module 1 will correspond with “Part One” in the text and so on. Please do the following for each module:
Read the textbook chapters stated in the module.
Listen to the audio examples and follow along with the listening guide when covered by the text. Most of our listening will be explained in the text and our listening examples are available on YouTube (I have provided links or embedded musical examples). Take notes from your book and about your own reactions to the pieces while listening as there will be questions from the listening on the exams.
Discussion Forum (20 points each): Modules 1-6 will have 2-3 Discussion assignments. The types of discussion assignments will be Listening Journals, Composer Profiles (Module 1 is and introduction video instead of a composer profile.), and discussions that will be related to the material from each part in the book.
Modules 5 & 7 have Listening Guide assignments (25 points each)
More details on each of these assignments are attached to each assignment in Canvas. At a minimum, write one response of your own and critically respond to at least one classmate’s response when required. When a response to a classmate’s post is required, your original should be posted by the due date (posted online) by 10:00 CST on Sundays, and your response should be posted no later than Monday nights at 10 pm.
Final Project: Concert Review (25 points): During the course of the semester, students are required to attend one live music performance, whether that is a professional touring artist's concert, a school band/orchestra/choir concert, a performance at a church, or a community ensemble performance, and to write about the experience - what elements of music were present and what musical genres and styles were represented. Details of how to complete this review are attached to the assignment in Canvas.

This report may be completed any time but is due with the Module 7 assignments. This link is also attached to the assignment directions in Canvas
Exams (Module 1 is 46 points and three exams, Modules 2-7 are 50 points each for two exams per module): For Modules 2-7, there will be two exams, one covering the text and one covering the listening. These will be due every Sunday night at 11:59pm CST.
Module 7 exams are due the last day of the course which is a Friday by 11:00pm CST.
